ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — A fired North Texas police officer accused of protecting an alleged drug dealer and helping sell anabolic steroids to department personnel has been indicted by a federal grand jury.
Ex-Arlington police officer Thomas Kantzos is facing one count of exceeding authorized access to a protected computer. Authorities allege Kantzos improperly used a police computer to help tip off his steroids dealer (http://cbsloc.al/155xSLm).
Kantzos, who had been with the force since 1995, was fired after his arrest last month.
Investigators say Kantzos, who’s free on bond, used police databases to slip information to an alleged dealer and helped arrange steroids sales to other officers.
If convicted, Kantzos faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Two other police officers had been implicated in the steroid investigation. David Vo was arrested for allegedly buying and distributing illegal steroids, and his arrest was enough to convince the department that there was likely a wider problem. Vo committed suicide after bonding out of jail. Officer Craig Harmons remains on administrative leave under suspicion of being involved in the case.
