The government may or may not be spying on your text messages, but either way, it's perfectly able to. Peter Sunde, co-founder of torrent site The Pirate Bay, wants to provide a secure alternative called Hemlis.

Hemlis (https://heml.is/), named after the Swedish word for "secret," will be an Android and iOS app that provides very traditional text messaging. The only major difference is that every communication that goes through Hemlis will be encrypted. In theory, not even the Hemlis crew itself will have access to what you write, much less a government agency.

"All communications on today's networks are being monitored by government agencies," said Sunde, in a video promoting the service. "The politicians are not going to stop it. They're actually asking for more." Without ad or data-sharing revenue, his team has turned to users to secure the funds they need.

Building a texting app is not very costly, especially compared to programming a navigation app or a game, but Sunde wants to ensure that Hemlis is not beholden to anyone except the creators and the users.
