Ultimate Fighter 19 competitor Mike King will be sitting on the sidelines for the next nine months after returning a positive drug test in his bout against Cathal Pendred at UFC Fight Night from Dublin, Ireland in July.
UFC officials confirmed the positive drug test in a statement (http://www.ufc.com/news/UFC-Statement-on-Mike-King) released on Wednesday.
According to the report, King tested positive for nandrolone -- a known anabolic steroid -- and it ended with him facing a nine-month suspension for the infraction. Because Ireland does not have their own regulatory athletic commission, the UFC administers the tests themselves as well as the punishment for any positive tests returned.
Nandrolone has popped up in other post fight drug tests including former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk, who popped for the drug following his fight with Hermes Franca at UFC 73 in 2007.
King has accepted the penalty and will now sit for the next nine months.
"He was informed that his positive test violated the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy and Promotional Agreement with Zuffa, LLC. The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by our athletes. He agreed to serve a 9-month suspension retroactive to the event and must pass a drug test before receiving clearance to compete again," the statement from the UFC read.
As another part of the suspension, King will also forgo his $50,000 'Fight of the Night' bonus that he earned in the fight with Pendred.
King will serve the suspension while also confirming in a statement (http://www.mmafighting.com/2014/8/13/5999739/ufc-middleweight-mike-king-suspended-nine-months-after-testing) that he has been released from the UFC.

A lot use them. I would say most don't. I know pro fighters and fought a few guys as an amateur who've gone to fight in the UFC. Even the guys here in Jersey who fight ROC are paranoid about drug testing. It's not as easy to get away with in MMA as it is in boxing or other sports.

This is true with all professional sports I want to believe.
