Ronald “Joey” Sales has written a book about his involvement in the illegal steroid trade over a period of two decades. Sales penned “Joey the Needle” while serving a twenty-month prison sentence for his most recent steroid-related conviction. The memoir is a sensationalized account of the experiences and extravagances in the life of a career steroid dealer.

Sales had been dealing anabolic steroids since 1991. He had been arrested four times and served prison time on two of those occasions. He never hesitated at returning to the steroid business until his last bust in 2010. Sales insisted that that marked the end of his steroid dealing ways.

Sales started his steroid “career” after reading a personal advertisement in the back of a popular bodybuilding magazine in 1991. The ad was from a Ukrainian man seeking a “pen pal.” Sales correctly interpreted the veiled advertisement as an invitation to buy and sell steroids.

Sales started importing steroids via international mail and never turned back. He was busted the first time in 1996 when a package of steroid pills was crushed in transit. The powder that leaked from the package aroused suspicion by postal employees who reported him to law enforcement. The 1996 steroid arrest resulted in probation.

The arrest didn't deter Sales. It only increased his resolve to become a bigger and better steroid dealer.

Sales admitted to living large and moving boxes and boxes of steroids as he became more and more successful.

“I was the worst-kept secret in town,” Sales said. “I always had money. I was going to Vegas, Oakland, Russia. (Bleep), they knew, come on. I didn’t give a (bleep); I wanted to see if the world was round.”

Sales admitted squandering most of the money he made. He even traveled to Europe and stayed at the home of his supplier who, as a host, treated Sales very well in the Ukraine.

Sales also traveled around the country with the local mixed martial arts (MMA) cage fighting circuit providing steroids to its participants. Sales didn't try very hard to conceal the nature of his business or the fruits of his business success.
Law enforcement authorities in Iowa claimed to have been fully aware of Sales' activities. They simply had bigger priorities.

“We knew about (Sales’) activities for several years,” Doug Hurley, special agent with the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, said of Sales’ involvement with cage fighters. “It was evident why they were running together.”

Sales was arrested in January 2001, convicted and served six months in prison. Yet, he continued to deal steroids until he was arrested in 2005. After 2005, he was considered “too hot” to continue handling product. So, his role in the steroid operation was reduced to receiving money from customers.

Sales' payment for his role in the business came in the form of a 5% commission on all money collected. The rest of the money was either wired to his steroid supplier in the Ukraine or wired to China to pay for raw materials on behalf of his supplier.

The steroid party came to an abrupt end in 2010. The long arm of federal law enforcement had set their crosshairs on Sales' steroid supplier in the Ukraine. Sales was one of several individuals involved in the Ukrainian's domestic steroid operation. One of the Ukrainian's shippers in Pittsburgh spilled the beans and set in motion a coordinated law enforcement action that resulted in the extradition of the Ukrainian and several of the domestic shippers and domestic money. Sales was busted admidst the crackdown.

While serving a 20-month prison term, Sales realized it was over for him this time.

Sales quit the illegal steroid business but expresses few regrets about the choices he made. His ability to survive the criminal justice system without “ratting” on anyone represents his proudest accomplishment.
