View Full Version : 5/3/1 with strongman

Started doing strongman events training on Wednesdays and thinking il do 5/3/1 training for the other 3 days of the week i will be lifting.
Been playing with a few ideas of the best way to program this and which assistance template/exercises to use but interested to hear what you guys would suggest.

I haven't done 531 but have used paul carters 365 strong and johnnie canditos 6 week templates with sm training. 365 is a three day template so I just added a day of strongman training. Canditos changes 5d/wk to 3d/wk over the program so was harder to get adequate recovery esp as its higher percentages/intensity. Just be smart. You'll know if you're running yourself into the dirt

I really like it. Especially the emphasis on paused work and the strong 15 as he calls the longer ramp up period. Works great for me pre competition. Peaks Strength adaptation without destroying me with high percentages. It's a program you've gotta have faith in tho coz you never hit true pbs until you test and he never actually tests in it. All that said, best $10 I've spent. [emoji6]

haven't started yet just doing research currently still yet to decide how to program my workouts

I've done it a couple of ways. Adding in a sm day is ok if you're doing 3d/wk I think. I've also just added an event to another day. So on squat day add on yokes. On deadlifts add on farmers. That sort of thing. Normally gotta rejig the session a bit but both work in my experience. As to what's optimal well I dunno
