HARTFORD >> A Shelton man pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids in U.S. District Court in Hartford Friday.

Mark Bertanza, 34, admitted Friday to buying the steroids and then distributing them to others, according to a release from Deirdre M. Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Throughout the investigation, officials confiscated approximately 600 grams of raw testosterone powder, approximately 350 grams of powder cocaine and four long guns, according to the release. Officials determined that Bertanza and others were buying steroid ingredients from China and then manufacturing and selling the drugs.

Bertanza could face up to 10 years in prison for the crime.

He is scheduled for sentencing by U.S. District Judge Robert Chatigny in Hartford in January.

Bertanza was arrested in April and was released on a 100,000 bond.

The FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives all contributed to the investigation.

NEW HAVEN >> Three men were arrested Thursday — and eight others were charged in a superseding indictment — for allegedly engaging in a distribution ring for steroids and prescription drugs, according to U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly’s office.

Eight of those charged in the superseding indictment, including a former Newtown police sergeant, originally were arrested in April.

According to court documents and statements, Steven Santucci, 38, of Waterbury, the former Newtown sergeant, was manufacturing and distributing steroids in wholesale from ingredients he received from China, Daly said. The other members of the alleged conspiracy were distributing ********* and other prescription drugs.

The arrests were the result of a long investigation by the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration and Department of Homeland Security.

In addition to Santucci, those charged in a 12-count superseding indictment were Alex Kenyhercz, 28, Jeffrey Gentile, 33, and Louis Borrero, 52, all of Ansonia; Frank Pecora, 53, of Derby; Mark Bertanza, 33, of Shelton; Jason Chickos, 46, of Bridgeport; Steven Fernandes, 54, of Southington; Michael D. Mase, 32, of Sherman; Guido Volpe, 36, of Prospect; and John Koch, 48, of Coventry.

All but Borrero, Volpe and Koch were arrested in April and charged in a May 6 indictment.

Thursday’s superseding indictment charges the 11 men with conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids. Santucci, Kenyhercz and Bertanza are also charged with six counts of possession with intent to distribute anabolic steroids, Daly said. Both charges carry a maximum term of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000.

In addition, Kenyhercz, Bertanza, Gentile, Pecora and Borrero were charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute *********. Pecora is also charged with possession with intent to distribute and distribution of *********, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine. Each of those charges carry a potential sentence of 20 years imprisonment and a maximum fine of $1 million.

Pecora also was charged with possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon; Santucci is charged with conspiracy to launder monetary instruments.

Daly’s office said law enforcement officers seized hundreds of vials of steroids, about 600 grams of raw testosterone powder, about 350 grams of powder cocaine and four long guns.

Pecora was held awaiting trial; the others were released on bond.

Usually when narcotics are involved this seems to be the outcome.
