Ed Herman's career resurgence shows no signs of slowing down.

For the third time in three fights since an extended injury layoff due to knee injuries, the veteran middleweight picked up an impressive victory – this time against a game Clifford Starks.

The main-card bout was part of UFC 143 and aired on pay-per-view from Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Events Center. Prelims aired on FX and streamed on Facebook.

The fight quickly turned into a slugfest, and Starks matched Herman's accuracy and power early on. Midway through the round, Herman's knees and uppercuts landed well, though Starks did his damage from the clinch and with counter-shots. His straight right also proved especially effective and did some damage to his opponent's left eye. Herman scored a takedown with a minute remaining in the round, but Starks swept and closed out an action-packed first round in top position.

In the second round, Herman scored a nice trip-takedown a minute in, and then he took Starks' back. Once the body lock was secure, he torqued a rear-naked choke. Starks initially fought it off, but the tap-out came soon after.

The official stoppage came at the 1:43 mark of the second round.

"I bring it every time, no matter what," Herman said. "My skills came together nicely, though I could have listened to my coaches more. Once I got on top, I knew I was going to get the finish.

"I've really matured a lot physically and mentally, and half the battle is mental so I was more prepared than ever. This is just another step of the journey for me. I feel like I am getting closer to fighting some of the top guys."

Herman (20-7 MMA, 7-5 UFC), who missed nearly two years due to serious knee injuries, now has defeated Tim Credeur, Kyle Noke and Starks (all via stoppage) since his June return. Starks (8-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC), who scored a UFC-debut victory over Dustin Jacoby in October, suffers his first career loss.
