I have had the best luck with Acer's, Toshiba's, and HP's (Hewlett Packard). Those three have outlasted any other brand I have used.

Being a computer technician the past 15 years I would highly lean toward an HP. They are by far the most solid PC manufacturer right now. Run away from Dell's they are really getting shotty. If you like the Mac OS then stick with a Mac but if you like Windows 7 (or 8 coming out in october) the Envy 15 model specs are a few hundred dollars cheaper for the same machine as a Mac (paying several hundred more simply for Apple's name). If you don't care about slimness or sleekness then the dv6t-7000 quad edition gives you the most power for the price. Right now there's a sale on for Labor Day (ends 9/1) If you are a student you can either get an xbox if the pc's over 699 or there's a great coupon right now LDS150 if you have the gross price over $1299 it's another $150 off on top of the instant rebates. Usually if you call you'll get the best deal with a sales rep. 1-888-999-4747

Love my acer! I'm computer ignorant but I got the 77?? Model lol. 17.5" screen. Seems great for the $. All I need but I'm not a gamer. I like the HDMI output for flat screens.

I was looking at MBP and decided I would rather have something thinner. Looked at the Macbook Airs but settled on the 15" Samsung Series 9. I love it. It's extremely thin and I like the 15" over 13" size.

Very fast too, but pricey at $1800 for the most spec'd out model. The base 13" is around $1300 I think.

Update: I bought a Mac Book Pro because everyone around me told me that it would be the best laptop ever. Now I'm trying to get rid of it to buy a Mac Book Air :p

I also have a Toshiba. It's about 3 years old. No problems yet. I wish I had a blu ray player in though.
