BUFFALO — One of three men who sold steroids while working as a guard at Buffalo Federal Detention Center in Batavia was sentenced to probation Monday in U.S. District Court.

Michael Trautmann, 49, of Cheektowaga pleaded guilty in May to distributing anabolic steroids. He could have faced up to 10 years in prison but Judge William Skretny opted for probation.

Trautmann was one of three employees who obtained and distributed steroids while employed at the detention center in the fall of 2010, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael L. McCabe, who is handling the case.

Trautmann and two other men, Richard Lazzaro, 39, of Cheektowaga and Richard Eldridge, 36, of West Seneca, were indicted a year ago after an investigation by special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Christopher M. Piehota and the Department of Homeland Security, Office of the Inspector General.

Lazzaro and Trautmann were working as federal contract employees and Eldridge as an immigration enforcement agent with the Department of Homeland Security.

Lazzaro pleaded guilty in August 2011. Eldridge pleaded guilty April 2 and has yet to be sentenced.
