An Oley Township man has been arrested on charges he was driving drunk and had anabolic steroid pills in his backpack when state troopers stopped him on Route 12 in Muhlenberg Township.
Reading police arrested Matthew A. McCaw, 25, late Sunday on a bench warrant issued Nov. 14 by District Judge Dean R. Patton after McCaw failed to appear for his hearing that day on the charges of drunken driving and possessing a controlled substance.
Arrest details were unavailable.
McCaw, whose last known address is the 400 block of Limekiln Road, was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail after arraignment early Monday before Senior District Judge Richard C. Beck in Reading Central Court.
State police gave this account:
Trooper Thomas Moran clocked McCaw traveling 82 mph in a 55-mph zone on westbound Route 12 at the Route 61 interchange July 6 about 1:30 a.m.
Moran smelled alcohol on McCaw's breath. McCaw failed a field-sobriety test and was taken into custody.
Troopers searched his backpack and found 40 unidentified pills in a shaving kit. McCaw did not have a prescription for the pills, which he said a friend had given him.
McCaw was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center for a blood test and released pending the results. The test determined his blood-alcohol level was 0.101 percent, above the legal limit of 0.08 percent for driving. A summons was sent to McCaw to appear for a hearing.
The pills were tested and determined to be anabolic steroids.
