TWIN FALLS • A former College of Southern Idaho baseball player has pleaded guilty to selling anabolic steroids.
William Robert “Billy Bob” Ward, 21, pleaded guilty Nov. 19 to three counts of delivery of a controlled substance. Three other charges were dropped:two charges of delivery of a controlled substance and one count of conspiracy to manufacture, deliver or possess a controlled substance.
Ward is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 7. Prosecutors are recommending a three- to nine-year prison sentence, which Ward could shorten with a successful stint in the state’s retained-jurisdiction program. A substance abuse assessment has also been ordered at Ward’s expense.
In court documents, Ward wrote he was pleading guilty “because on Feb. 29, April 3 and May 14 I delivered testosterone propionate to a confidential informant in violation of Idaho law.”
According to the plea agreement, Ward will not request a withheld judgment and must serve a mandatory 100 hours of community service if he is sentenced to probation.
Ward was arrested in May after a lengthy investigation by Idaho State Police into the sale of anabolic steroids by Ward to several of his Golden Eagles teammates.
Court records detail how police used a confidential informant, one who told detectives the names of four other baseball players who allegedly purchased steroids from Ward — whose supplier was located in his hometown of Las Vegas.
There is no testing for steroids at the junior college level, although athletes are tested routinely for drugs common in recreational usage.
