A feared bike enforcer has been charged with possessing steroids and testosterone after police found vials of the substances during a raid on his house.
Hells Angels East County sergeant-at-arms Peter ''Skitzo'' Hewat is already facing more than 20 charges after allegedly punching a 62-year-old woman in the face during a dispute over Hewat's shih-tzu terrier.
Police added the charges of illegally possessing the steroid Trenbolone and the testosterone substance Cypionate after they raided Hewat's Mickleham home and arrested him in March.
The chain of events began in December when Hewat's white shih-tzu terrier escaped during a storm and was found by a Craigieburn woman.
The 62-year-old put up posters of the dog around the neighbourhood trying to find the owner. According to police, Hewat's wife rang the woman and, instead of thanking her, began abusing her.
The woman responded that she would need proof of ownership before handing over the dog. But the dog was eventually returned.
Police alleged at a bail hearing in March that the couple who found the dog then suffered three months of intimidation and threats by Hewat and members of his family, culminating in Hewat turning up at the woman's house and punching her in the face.
The next day, two men, one armed with a pistol, turned up at the victim's house and told her not to go to the police about the alleged assault. One of the men is alleged to have said to the terrified woman: ''Karma will come and get you sooner than you think. Don't forget this you f---ing slut, we mean business.''
When police raided Hewat's Craigieburn towing company, they allegedly found a stolen earth-moving machine, a stolen lawnmower, a stolen car, a stolen truck, ammunition and about 500 grams of tablets they believe to be ecstasy.
Hewat said he did not know the vehicles were stolen, and that he had no idea how the drugs came to be at his business.
The discovery of testosterone and steroids at Hewat's home are another illustration of the increasing influence of steroids, testosterone and similar substances in outlaw motorcycle gangs.
A massive rise in the quantities of steroids and growth hormones being seized at the borders has been linked to higher usage by bikie gangs.
Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay has expressed concerns about gym-going police being corrupted by bikies who offer them steroids.
It was also revealed recently that Bandidos sergeant-at-arms Toby Mitchell is being treated by the man at the centre of Essendon's supplements scandal, sports scientist Steven Dank, for injuries sustained in a shooting.
Mr Dank and South Yarra doctor Robin Willcourt have been providing rehabilitation advice to the bikie figure since he was shot in November 2011.
However, there is no suggestion that the steroid treatment provided to Mitchell is anything other than legal and above board.
''Those guys treat a lot of people, including lawyers, teachers and others. Mitchell is treated like any other patient,'' a source told Fairfax Media recently.
Mitchell nearly died after being shot five times outside Doherty's Gym, in Brunswick, in November 2011. He was on life support for weeks and lost a kidney and part of his liver.
It was one of two attempts on Mitchell's life in the past two years, including one in March when he and other Bandidos were ambushed outside the affiliated Diablos gang's Melton clubhouse. Mitchell was shot in the right bicep, while a second Bandido suffered minor wounds.
