One Bad Rep! Pec Tears! Who's Had'em? How Did Your Training Change?

Had one a little under 2 yrs ago. At the time I was focusing on improving my bench because I sucked at it and it was time to get better. On this particular day I was working the incline and planning on working up to the 250-260 range and practicing with some singles to get the feel of the lift. On my second rep with 225 on the negative it felt as if someone nicked me with a hot razor blade about 4 inches over my left nipple. I was able to finish the rep but knew I was screwed. The tear was in the muscle belly itself so there wasn't much I could do about it. I was able to work around the injury by doing strictly overhead work but I managed to give myself an a/c joint issue about 2 months into it. I've had a couple minor tweaks to the pec since then - once doing weighted pushups and once doing speed/dynamic work. Started to work on my bench again here recently with the help of a slingshot which was a great little investment. I now do all my bench work with the slingshot and all reps are paused. One bad rep can completely change your training.

There's scar tissue in there that tightens up on me and some general soreness from lifting but I've made adjustments in my training that allow me to keep improving and prevent further injury.

Never tore a pec but I have torn a Triceps before! It was a long time ago, but I still always think about it when benching!

Same here bro. Ruptured my triceps tendon 9 months ago.left arm is 10-15 lbs weaker. I'm probable 80% strength wish from this time before the rupture. There's also a difference in the muscle size. I've had to alter my workouts, change reps & sets can't do certain exercises.

I know exactly what you mean about always having the injury in the back if your head. I catch myself holding back.

What movements do you have to avoid? I can't do dumbell or machine flys. For some reason the negative aggravates the area. I can do flys with a trx strap attached to a sled (no negative). I really like these. I also have to bench with a shoulder width grip and pause every rep. I get tightness if the turn around at the bottom is too fast.
