      Straps have there place-
I use them for Bent rows, DL's, walking DB lunges, Shrugs. A great tool that I keep in my gym bag.

I never use them for deads, as I never wanted to get in the habit since in powerlifting competition they aren't allowed; for the other stuff wrist straps are necessary like everyone says above; you absolutely need them for stuff like shrugs, lockouts, etc. if you want to make the gains, esp. with the deadlift itself.

I find them very helpful and like someone said after deadlifts my grip strength is shot. I try to still concentrate on really squeezing the bar but let's be honest it's a tool to help us hit that next level.
