      Online Anonymity - Fuck's a VPN?

A VPN is a Virtual Private Network.
[I will not discuss private IP's (assigned by network, used for internal use.) ]
A full explanation of the details of the system is beyond the scope of this discussion so I will simplify the concept much as possible while still providing an adequate explanation.

Individuals purchase internet service from various internet service providors (ISP's). The method via which your ISP provides service (cable, DSL, phone line, or any other method) is irrelevant. The data sent and received can be and is most likely monitored by your connection provider. The concept of internet privacy has dissapeared a long time ago and unless one obsures their internet activity, it is safe to assume everything is being recorded and can potentially be used against them.

Your ISP knows what your IP address is. Think of it as your private phone number that the internet can "call" to transfer data. If asked by law enforcenement, they will hand over information regarding your IP can end up revealing your identity. With your plain IP address, it is not difficult to have a general idea of where you are located. A ton of services online offer free ip details, for example http://www.ip-adress.com/what_is_my_ip/ , shows all the information that a site can obtain by a single visit.

I may come off sounding like a paranoid nut, but what's the harm in being overly cautious on a forum discussing controlled substances?

Now onto the fun stuff. VPN's are a virtual private network. A VPN, if setup correctly, can provide you with a more secure sense of security while using the internet. Your connection is secured with a server setup elsewhere (usually at various datacenters aroudn the world) and then you can use that connection as an exit node or a "messenger" to receive and send data. Your ISP will still see outgoing and incoming data but with any half-decent VPN, they will see encrypted data and have difficulty knowing exactly what you are up to. Now, a majority of these VPN companies assure "we do not log", "we value privacy", etc. This is literally impossible for them to do as whenever a connection is made, every current protocol (OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, etc) has to receive the connection and verify the user (id/pw).

I choose to stick with companies who do not promise things that aren't possible but are clear and honest on what their policies are. I also consider where they offer exit nodes. I don't need to have every country as an exit node but a fair amount of USA based nodes, free speech country nodes, and random nodes (For some reason, UK nodes appeal to me). I have worked with a multitude of VPN providors (Cryptostorm, Hide.me, PrivatVPN.se, SecurityKiss, BolehVPN, and the list goes on) and my recommendations are below.

Before you decide to stick with any VPN service, make sure to read over their terms and conditions, use policy, privacy policy, etc. Claims may be different than their terms of service.

For the user who simply purchases AAS for personal use and does not do anything further than that, go with securitykiss. It's a free VPN with a good selection of exit nodes. The speed provided might not be the best but it's free. Nothing gives anyone the right to complain about a free service.

For users who want an actual VPN, I would go with hide.me. Their exit nodes are everywhere and at under $15 a month for peace of mind, how can you really complain? I started with the free plan, then switched to their premium plan since I need to switch computers often. They offer a free plan, plus plan, and a premium plan, you can find details about them on their pricing page. I'm not a fan of macbooks but when I have to use em, it's hide.me's been the easiest to setup compared to others. The ease of setup and server latency pretty much had me hooked. FYI:I added my referall link for hide.me. I'm not giving this review at an attempt to make a few dollars off of membership conversions, it's an honest review. Use it or not, up to you. I'd appreciate it but it's not worth talking about further.

I initially preferred PrivatVPN due to my long history with them, but hide.me's faster speed got me to switch over. They (privatvpn)'ve had a few issues with heartbleed and the connection is unstable at times. I can't have that in a VPN. I need a reliable network.

BolehVPN has also been good at times but their connection speed is what turned me off. They're cheap and aren't a bad company, i just didn't click with them.

VPN's I would stay away from: PIA, Hidemyass, EarthVPN.
