I'm just looking to get with the times and be as safe as possible so just wondering how I go about all of this. Any feedback would be most appreciated brothers.
Thank you

TOR
there is a browser called "TOR" the onion.
it can be added as a Firefox add on to desktop, or a separate browser on android. its called "TorBrowser" and "OrBot" look for them both in play store.
they are very secure, more so than a vpn
did you happen to just Google 'tor'?

Open in Tor Browser – Add-ons for Firefox
Free VPN's are well, Free... and as the saying goes.. Nothing in life is Free. You pay for the Free service with glacially slow speeds, as well as add intrusion and lower number of servers to choose from. I finally opted for NordVPN figuring that the price for a two year subscription is about the same as a good bottle of Scotch.. well worth it to me.
Here's a list from PC Magazine of the Best VPN services to use in 2018 The Best VPN Services of 2 18 | PCMag.com I believe using a VPN or TOR browser (personally don't care fore the slow browsing speeds) Tor Browser review and where to download | TechRadar can give you some anonymity when online.
Ok so I installed the open in tor for firefox and it said it was successful and the icon is up there in the top right corner so this means it's good to go? It's always active when I'm on the web or no?
Sorry for all the questions guys, but I'm not tech savvy by any means lol.
I know you said free. But a website called science alert have deals on lifetime subscriptions for different VPN services. Worth a look. And yeah tor is great. I use them both at the same time sometimes.
