Lightbulb PSA: Encrypt your Gmail, Outlook, etc with Mailvelope - SUPER EASY!

Mailvelope is a browser addon that lets you add encryption to your standard email so you can send PGP encrypted email to people without having to use a separate service. It's extremely simple to install and works on all major browers.

      Here's what you do:

      1. Visit Mailvelope
      2. Download the extension
      3. Generate a key (see pic below)
      4. Enter your name (if you're using your real one), your email, and create a secure password. I recommend using Roboform if you don't already have a password manager (YOU SHOULD!) it will generate secure passwords on the fly, save them, and it even auto fills passwords on your phone. RoboForm: Manage your passwords with ease and security
      5. The default keyserver they have setup is dead, so I recommend changing it to pgp.mit.edu. However, it's still best to send your PUBLIC key (not private) to the friend you're trying to send an encrypted email too. Just go into key management and click export. The file extension will be .asc. Email that to your friend as an attachment and have them import it into their copy of Mailvelope. Now you're ready to send encrypted emails.
      6. Now you're setup and ready to send encrypted emails. Mailvelope will automatically add a little button to all your emails with a red M icon. Just click on that and click send encrypted email.
      7. A separate box will pop up and you will need to enter the person's email address along with the message. For some reason, Mailvelope doesn't let you enter a Subject line, so you'll have to do that manually when you're done.
      8. Then you're done! The other person will receive your PGP encrypted email, it will automatically decrypt (as long as they have your public key) and the govt, your email service, and your OPSEC (operational security) will be much higher than sending plain text emails.

Give it a try, it's super easy to use and is much better than just emailing people unecrypted in plain text. That's a recipe for disaster if you're concerned about your personal privacy and security.

Try it out and let me know how it works for you. If you have any questions, feel free to let me know!

Good to know. But tutanota etc is free and so easy, and not connected to you at all, can be 100% deleted etc. Not sure if I see the point in this but that’s me.

I guess my question would be why?

There are many free encrypted email providers out there. But, I still see a lot of people sending me email from Gmail, Yahoo, etc w/o any regard for security. I always tell them to get a protonmail account, but a lot of them are reluctant to do so for some reason.

But, if you just install mailvelope, you can send encrypted emails from Gmail, etc and it's free and super easy to use.

We also have to remember the Hushmail fiasco. No matter how secure and encrypted and offshore a company claims to be, if LE leans on them hard enough, they can probably find a way to access your email regardless.

Stay paranoid and always use good OPSEC! Use a VPN or TOR Browser, or if you're super paranoid or want complete security, I would recommend installing Tails OS to a USB stick and booting from that. That's what Edward Snowden used when he was releasing all his classified info.

I plan to make a post about Tails OS if there is any interest in it. But, I've made these other posts and I'm not getting too many views or replies, so I don't know if there is too many concern about OPSEC here on this forum.

      AWESOME info dude thank u

I’d def Appreciate any extra info regarding cyber security. After all...that’s how most transactions are done. Whether viewing it or actually doing bitcoin transactions. And if ur doing that a VPN is a must IMO. and a good one at that.

What’s ur view on mobile phone VPN apps?

Mobile phone VPN apps are just as good as PC ones, you just have to pick the right provider. If you REALLY want to take your time and do some research on which VPNs are the best, then have a look at TorrentFreak's Guide to Anonymous VPN's 2020 guide.

Which VPN Providers Really Take Anonymity Seriously in 2020? * TorrentFreak

This is mainly to do with downloading torrents, but it's also very good info for which companies are not located in the US and have no jurisdiction with US courts, don't log anything that's done or delete logs promptly, and offer a fair price that you're willing to pay.

I use Windscribe as I mentioned above. They're located in Canada and can't be compelled to wiretap users. They delete logs prompt and use high grade military encryption between connections. They also have a pretty nice built in firewall that blocks ads and a lot of other junk.

They also offer a VPN for mobile.

If you decide to sign up with them, I would appreciate it if you would use my referral link. That gets me a free month of service from them. But, if you decide on another VPN, no worries. Here's my link:

That really just depends on how well they wrote the software. Depending on what model phone you have sometimes you can adjust the battery usage of the app. Plus I wouldn't say you need to run it all the time, just when you're browsing this forum or things like that.
