Study says keto diet is neuro degenerative
Just another PubMed study but we live by them it seems. Lets keep aware that for every study that says something is bad there is a study that says its good. And also keep in mind that some studies are dome well with good methods and othet studies are done terribly .
But we need to also keep an open mind because science is ever changing.
Something to look into.
Abstract
Mitochondrial genome maintenance plays a central role in preserving brain health. We previously demonstrated accumulation of mitochondrial DNA damage and severe neurodegeneration in transgenic mice inducibly expressing a mutated mitochondrial DNA repair enzyme (mutUNG1) selectively in forebrain neurons. Here, we examine whether severe neurodegeneration in mutUNG1-expressing mice could be rescued by feeding the mice a ketogenic diet, which is known to have beneficial effects in several neurological disorders. The diet increased the levels of superoxide dismutase 2, and mitochondrial mass, enzymes, and regulators such as SIRT1 and FIS1, and appeared to downregulate N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor subunits NR2A/B and upregulate ***947;-aminobutyric acid A (GABAA) receptor subunits ***945;1. However, unexpectedly, the ketogenic diet aggravated neurodegeneration and mitochondrial deterioration. Electron microscopy showed structurally impaired mitochondria accumulating in neuronal perikarya. We propose that aggravation is caused by increased mitochondrial biogenesis of generally dysfunctional mitochondria. This study thereby questions the dogma that a ketogenic diet is unambiguously beneficial in mitochondrial disorders.
Enjoy your day!

This is very surprising, I haven't looked at much of the research out there but I have always seen a lot of credible people recommend keto diets for neuro degenerative diseases such as dementia, Alzheimers etc. Do you have the whole study you could link me? I wanna see their methods. I have seen quite a bit of research pointing towards keto diets been very beneficial at reducing the impact of cancer and slowing down the growth of cancer cells as cancer cells are very glucose dependant however they're not able to take advantage of gluconeogenesis so the resulting starvation of glucose affects their growth

I'm inclined to think it's individualistic. My brain seems to enjoy healthy fats as a fuel source. Avoiding sugar has become a healthy habit, though it took a while to figure out how to eat this way after many years of the sugar loaded 'American diet'. Keto got me leaner than ever and I've added oats on bulking as well as post workout rice or potatoes while avoiding sugar and I've kept fat gain minimal while growing muscle as I would on a dirty bulk. Some guys can eat anything and remain lean, unfortunately I'm not one of these guys.

I wasn't able to access the rest of the study.
But this is one study vs how many that show exactly what you just described.
I would still follow a form of keto now and then to drop bf regardless what this study says.
I only m posted it to just show there is another side to the coin with all these studies.
