If I ask this question it could only be considered a compliment because it means I have noticed something impressive about your physique that stands out from all the other people in the gym. In fact, I rarely see anyone at my gyms, male or female, who even remotely resemble a competitive bodybuilder. Usually if I make that sort of query, the answer IS a specific show.

I agree that doing this thing we do is bodybuilding, competing or not. Which is why I have always made the distinction of saying “competitive bodybuilder” from the first day I committed to doing my first show.

Someone admiring the improvements to your body and mentioning them in any way should never be considered anything but complimentary.
I personally dont see it as a back handed compliment.

It can for sure be a compliment especially since I personally know competing isnt my thing.

I guess the annoyance comes from assuming because I am in decent shape and have a decent amount of muscle and am a woman that it has to be ONLY because I must be competing. My husband is in as decent shape as me and no one ever asks him that.

Just like when random people start a conversation asking do I work out. Redefining the female bodybuilder. Like this is an obvious thing especially as a woman with this much muscle. I am a nice person but it would be funny to one day say no and see someones face Redefining the female bodybuilder

      k
Ok, this makes sense. So like the insult would be because the person would assume the only reason to be muscular is competing. Not because it looks waaaay better than fat.

      Shoe other foot...
You ask some fat fuck if hes preparing for Nathans showdown. Which ironically has mostly skinny people.
Probably more of a different kind of footwear.

I guess I get annoyed by guys asking me if Im a body lifter or How much do you lift.
The worst is when they ask if you use steroids and make the junkie shooting up gesture.
But this NEVER occurs in the gym so maybe context and location come into play.

Ive never complimented breasts and followed up with Is that a boob job?
Of course, Ive never complimented breasts. Ive probably urged small breasted women with amazing bodies not to mutilate themselves with surgery but that has been only in close circles.
