      OIL PULLING

OIL PULLING - THE HABIT THAT CAN TRANSFORM YOUR HEALTH

By Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND, DACBN, DABFM

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic remedy for oral health and detoxification. It involves the use of pure oils as agents for pulling harmful bacteria, fungus, and other organisms out of the mouth, teeth, gums and even throat.

      How To Oil Pull-
The most effective oil pulling is done by placing around a tablespoon of cold pressed organic sesame oil into the mouth and swishing the oil around the mouth for approximately 10-15 minutes and then spitting it out.

Other oils such as extra virgin cold pressed *coconut, sunflower and olive oil have been used, although sesame oil is considered one of the best oils for this practice. I recommend alternating oils every couple of days to get the full benefit.*Putting high quality organic oils into the mouth has a multi-effect outcome.

First, the oils mix with the saliva, turning it into a thin, white liquid. Lipids in the oils begin to pull out toxins from the saliva. As the oil is swished around the mouth, teeth, gums and tongue, the oil continues to absorb toxins, and usually ends up turning thick and viscous and white. Once the oil has reached this consistency, it is spit out before the toxins are reabsorbed.

What Does Oil Pulling Do?Multiple scientific studies show the efficacy of oil pulling therapy. One study shows that oil pulling with sesame oil can boost overall oral health. Specifically, using sesame oil as an oral health agent helps to reduce the amount of S. mutans (germ) count in both teeth plaque and mouth saliva. Scientists believe that the lipids in the oil both pull out bacteria, as well as stop bacterial from sticking to the walls of the oral cavity.

Oil pulling may also increase saponification in the mouth, creating a soapy environment that cleanses the mouth as vegetable fat is an emulsifier by nature. Most interesting is perhaps the ability of oil to cleanse out harmful bacteria, as well as reduce fungal overgrowth. These oils also possibly help in cellular restructuring, and are related to the proper functioning of the lymph nodes and other internal organs.

Other possible benefits of oil pulling for oral health include:
      • Overall strengthening of the teeth and gums and jaws
      • Prevention of diseases of the gums and mouth, such as cavities and gingivitis
      • Prevention for bad breath
      • Potential holistic remedy for bleeding gums
      • Prevention of dryness of the lips, mouth and throat
      • Possible holistic treatment for TMJ and general soreness in the jaw area

Benefits Beyond the Mouth?Ancient Ayurvedic health practitioners believed that oil pulling could reduce more than just diseases of the mouth and throat. Today, many holistic practitioners tout its use for a variety of health concerns.*

It is believed that these oils help the lymphatic system of the body as harmful bacteria are removed and beneficial microflora are given with a healthy environment to flourish. Because of this holistic perspective, oil pulling has been used as a preventative health measure for many other conditions.

Other possible benefits of oil pulling for overall health include:

      • Migraine headache relief
      • Correcting hormone imbalances
      • Reducing inflammation of arthritis
      • May help with gastro-enteritis
      • Aids in the reduction of eczema
      • May reduce symptoms of bronchitis
      • Helps support normal kidney function
      • May help reduce sinus congestion
      • Some people report improved vision
      • Helps reduce insomnia
      • Reduced hangover after alcohol consumption
      • Aids in reducing pain
      • Reduces the symptoms of allergies
      • Helps detoxify the body of harmful metals and organisms

Scientific Studies on Sesame Oil and Oil PullingSesame oil is particularly high in the antioxidantssesamol, sesamin, and sesamolin. It also holds a high concentration of Vitamin E and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These antioxidants have been found to stop the absorption of negative forms of cholesterol in the liver. Multiple studies have shown the antibacterial capacities of sesame oil. These studies support the use of oil pulling in the prevention of dental cavities and gingivitis.

A 2007 study looking into the effect of oil pulling (with sunflower oil) on plaque and gingivitis on oral soft and hard tissues. Results found that after 45 days of oil pulling, subjects showed a statistically significant reduction in gingivitis.

Another study , conducted in 2008 found a “remarkable reduction in the total count of bacteria” in the mouth, and an overall marked reduction in susceptibility dental cavities. The antibacterial activity of sesame oil was also studied and found to have an effect on the Streptococcus mutans in the mouth.

I'm using organic coconut oil but I'm gonna alternate with some organic sesame oil. The coconut oil has a couple extra benefits (I can't remember what they were off the top of my head right now) but I suggest melting it first. I've been just chewing on it till it melts in my mouth then swish it around for 15 mins or so. The first few seconds are kinda rough while it's still a solid....lol

I've done it for two days now. So far I just feel a very clean feeling in my mouth and on my teeth. And my lips are very moist. I don't think I'll be worrying about chapped lips anytime soon! I'll keep you guys posted on how it's going....

Here is a recent article by CBS:

      ByRyan JaslowCBS NewsMarch 12, 2014, 5:09 PM

"Oil pulling" used by some to boost oral health: Does it work?

Most nights you might swish mouthwash around your teeth to stave off cavities and gum disease, but some folks are turning to a more slippery solution to gargle: oil.

Oil pulling -- or swishing and gargling oil in the mouth -- has long been used in traditional Indian culture because it was thought to prevent disease and eliminate toxins from the body. As CBS affiliate KHOU in Houston points out, some modern practitioners believe it improves oral health. Proponents claim 20 minutes of gargling oil -- such as sunflower or sesame oil -- may prevent plaque buildup, whiten teeth, treat gum disease and kill bad breath. Some even claim it has health benefits for conditions ranging from arthritis to a hangover, according to KHOU.

The Indian alternative medicine practice Ayurveda claims oil pulling can prevent 30 different diseases by pulling toxins from the mouth that you can spit out. A 2011 study in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine says it has been used extensively as a folk remedy for many years to prevent decay, bad breath, bleeding gums, dryness of throat, cracked lips and for strengthening teeth, gums and the jaw. "Well you know, it can't hurt. There is at least one study that shows it reduces strep bacteria in the mouth," Houston dentist Dr. Wayne Brueggen, told KHOU.

Dr. John C. Comisi, a spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry who practices in Ithaca, N.Y., told CBS News the science behind it makes sense for mouth health. When we eat foods and sugars, he explained, an acidic environment is created in our mouths. This could lower the mouth's pH levels, leading to a rise in bad bacteria that erode tooth enamel, a process that "spirals downward" to result in dental caries, or cavities. Oils are alkaline bases, which means they would neutralize the mouth's pH and drop the acid levels, reducing this bad bacteria and, theoretically, reducing cavity risk. "The reality is if it helps in some capacity reduce the caries risk in a natural format... I can't see it being harmful at this time," Comisi said. But he pointed out there is no hard scientific research to back up the claims. Also, he's unsure how many people are going to swish oil around for 20 minutes then rinse it out thoroughly after. "Many people don't even take the time to effectively brush their teeth for two minutes," he said.

Has anyone had any luck pulling oil?

Here is a link to a recent news video about oil pulling:

Oil Pulling: The Hot New Health and Beauty Craze

By Shereen Dindar | Shine – 9 hours ago

An age old health and beauty regimen has become the talk of the Internet. This week, the term "Oil Pulling" is trending on social media and on search engines (it's spiking by 1331% on Yahoo). If you've been wondering just what oil pulling is, here's a breakdown.

The term may sound like a very complicated, but all it really involves is swishing oil around in your mouth once a day. The ancient Ayurvedic practice requires you to gargle a teaspoon to a tablespoon of natural, cold-pressed oil in your mouth for 20 minutes. Most people prefer to use coconut oil because of the taste. Once you are done, you spit out the oil and brush your teeth, reports Style Caster. It is believed that the oil absorbs toxins and bacteria in the mouth, preventing them from being absorbed into the body. The practice is best done daily in the morning when the mouth is said to have the most bacteria. It is important that you do not swallow the oil as it carries bacteria, and it is recommended that you spit the oil into the garbage, as it might clog your sink drain.

Many who have tried the practice swear by it. Proponents say it can improve gum disease, toothaches, headaches, acne, eczema, sleep issues, hangovers, allergies and ulcers. Not to mention help heal cuts, whiten teeth and improve nails. That's a tall order!

Whether oil pulling really helps all those ailments is another story.

So far, anecdotal evidence is all we have to go on. The scientific evidence supporting the practice is lacking, as no credible long-term studies examining its presumed health and beauty benefits have been conducted to date.

It's worth nothing that Deepak Chopra, an alternative medicine guru, endorses the practice in his 2001 book Perfect Health.

Oil pulling was brought to the west in 1992 by Dr. F. Karach who claimed the practice could help with heart disease, digestive troubles and hormonal disorders.
