Metformin diabetes drug may also extended lifespan.

Around the forums you may see talk of metformin (Glucophage) as a form of GDA (glucose disposal agent) and a bodybuilders way to manipulate insulin instead of using actual insulin.
Well now a committed group of scientists is seeking to validate metformin as the first ever anit-aging medication.
In this day of staggering drug prices, metformin is available as a low-cost generic.
The FDA has approved the first anti-aging study to be done with this drug....

Anti-Aging Human Study on Metformin Wins FDA Approval
      March 2016

      By Judy Stevens

News Reports around World Describe Multiple Benefits
The media has caught up to the potential health benefits of metformin, something our long-term supporters discovered long ago.

What caught the media's attention was the FDAs approval of the first human study to see if metformin can protect against the multiple diseases of aging.

Prominent headlines around the world proclaimed:

New Anti-Aging Drug Could Extend Human Life Span to 120 Years

Metformin of course is not a new drug. It was approved in England in 1957 and made available to type II diabetics around the world shortly thereafter. It took the FDA a staggering 37 years to approve it in the United States.

Here are some accurate quotes from worldwide news sources:

News Reports around World Describe Multiple Benefits
Although it might seem like science fiction, researchers have already proven that the diabetes drug metformin extends the life of animals, and the Food and Drug Administration in the US has now given the go-ahead for a trial to see if the same effects can be replicated in humans.

I have been doing research into aging for 25 years and the idea that we would be talking about a clinical trial in humans for an anti-aging drug would have been thought inconceivable20 years ago aging was a biological mystery. Now we are starting to understand what is going on.

Scientists think the best candidate for an anti-aging drug is metformin, the worlds most widely used diabetes drug, which costs just 10p [15 cents] a day. Metformin increases the number of oxygen molecules released into a cell, which appears to boost robustness and longevity.

If we can slow aging in humans, even by just a little bit, it would be monumental. People could be older, and feel young.

This would be the most important medical intervention in the modern era, an ability to slow aging.

Even the venerable Dr. Robert Temple, deputy director at the FDA, chimed in by stating:

Their hope is that a wide variety of age-related problems, loss of muscle tone, dizziness, falls, dementia, loss of eyesight, all of those things [sic]. That would be something never done before. If you really are doing something to alter aging, the population of interest is everybody. It surely would be revolutionary if they can bring it off.

Dr. Simon Melov of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging added:

Youre talking about developing a therapy for a biological phenomenon which is universal and gives rise to all of these diseases. And if you;ve got a therapy for this thing, these diseases just go away.

Life Extension® Has Championed Metformin for 20 Years
Life Extension® magazine listed metformin as one of many important offshore medications back in 1995. And now, 20 years later, even the FDA concurs that metformin has potential to delay the onset of degenerative diseases.

But contrary to news headlines, metformin will not enable humans to live to 120 years of age all by itself. What it may do is allow humans to age better today thereby staving off degenerative diseases long enough for age-reversal breakthroughs to become clinically available.

      Metformins Primary Anti-Aging Mechanism
Metformin enhances the activity of an enzyme found within our cells called adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase or AMPK for short. AMPK activation helps mimic the beneficial effects of calorie restriction, the best documented method of slowing and reversing biomarkers of human aging.

We at Life Extension® have long endorsed AMPK activation as a method of slowing biological aging. We advocate that our supporters utilize some proven method to increase their cellular AMPK activity, which could add substantial healthy years to the average life span.

How to Boost Your AMPK Today!
How to Boost Your AMPK Today!
We do not want you to age prematurely, waiting years for the results of the new FDA-approved human study. Thats why we recommend you initiate steps now to boost healthy AMPK activity today.

One of the benefits of practicing consistent calorie restriction is a substantial increase in AMPK activity as cells go into a semi-starvation mode and increase their survival efficiency.

People under age 60 who regularly/vigorously exercise boost their AMPK levels. This may be the mechanism by which exercise markedly lowers cancer risk. As people age past 60, exercise may not adequately boost AMPK enzyme activity.

If you;re presently taking 1,000 to 2,550 mg of metformin daily, you don't have to do anything, simply enjoy this drug's anti-aging benefits. But if you cannot acquire a prescription for metformin, or cannot tolerate it due to digestive issues, there are nutrient formulas that have been shown to significantly boost AMPK activity.

That's fascinating information! I've used it for fat loss a couple times and it did a tremendous job.
This game isn't for everyone, being big and bloated doesn't make you the man, nor does being 110lbs ripped. If you are not competing, find a happy medium. I was thin once, learned all there was to learn about steroids and got pretty big. Then learned how to eat and I got really huge.

Nice! Tell us about your protocol. Also did you supplement with b12?
      Any side effects?

I took 500mg three times a day. I did not take b12 with it. I did not have any side effects other than drastic drop in blood sugar to the point where i would be so exhausted and fall asleep. I had to carry a bottle of cranberry juice with extra sugar mixed in and drink it through out the day to combat it. Even doing that the fat dropped off. I wasn't on cycle either time and just used craeatine with it and noticed a moderate streangth increase which i assume was from the insulin factor.

It's amazing and i think it should be everyone's first go to when looking to drop fat. After all it's been approved for off label use as a fat loss drug.

There's many studies proving that metformin inhibits mtor. The article above even alluded to it by mentioning AMPK and calorie restriction which are directly correlated with that inhibition. For those that know a bit about exercise physiology mtor is crucial in the process of protein synthesis and atp energy production. Not exactly something that you would want as a bodybuilder. There's other studies that also allude to metformin having an effect on down regulating igf-1 receptors, though results are not conclusive on that yet and studies were done on mostly cancer cells.

I personally think metformin is a bit overrated in the BB community and you're better off regulating insulin/insulin sensitivity and blood glucose levels through diet and exercise. Purely from a BB perspective if you have a normal functioning body with a good diet where your blood glucose levels are regulated. Then you have absolutely no need to use metformin. Unless you're on such high doses of hgh where your blood sugar levels and insulin resistance start becoming a problem. But at that point you're better off just using insulin to regulate your body.

Metformin is referred as a weight loss drug to pre diabetics or type 2 diabetics where they are already suffering health problems and high insulin resistance. It is used for the purpose of these individuals being able to lower their blood glucose levels and get to a healthy body weight range to be cured of diabetes. Again a healthy person does not need metformin to do this as their body should already be effective enough at doing this alone.

I think metformin has its benefits, but it's not the wonder drug that some claim it is. I took it before, 859mg 2x a day. No huge difference for me but I'm not pre diabetic either. I hear it can lower testosterone and igf levels. Berberine supposively mimics the blood sugar effects of metformin and is completely natural. More trial and error is needed for me!

Just remember we are not talking about metformin effects on BBs or for fat loss or whatever. You guys all mention good points but the purpose is to discuss that metformin is being looked at by medical science to extend lifespan.

That's true, will be interesting to see what comes of it if they conduct studies. But body builders have known the two best anti ageing drugs for decades. We as body builders probably abuse these drugs but I guarantee someone in their 40-50's using 2-3 iu of hgh with a clinical dose of hrt test with a healthy lifestyle will live very long and age very very well provided they don't have a genetic pre disposition to a disease or illness. Shame there's such vilification and misinformation of these drugs by the media, population, government agencies etc
