Washing vials and rubber stoppers - Enigma, thoughts?

I wash my vials and runner stoppers with by hand with Tergazyme but it’s time consuming. Does anyone use ultrasounds to clean their materials?

Yeah new sterile vials are really cheap and risking the oil u just doesn't time and money filtering getting contaminated doesnt seem worth it to save a tiny bit of money.

Not to mention my time is valuable and the amount of money saved doesn't make up for the time lost for me

I use an autoclave and just ordered a flowhood. I bottle 50 vials at a time. So, it’s more cost effective for me to clean, and sterilize, the vials and stoppers instead of going the pre-sterilized route.

YI can’t get washed and sterile silicone stoppers. As mentioned before, I only use silicone. So I just wash them in mild, soapy water, rinses like crazy, wash with iso alcohol and then distilled water. I use a salad spinner between each step to remove gross liquids. Then I put then in my lab oven at about 200c for probably 30 minutes minimum. I say probably because I put them and other things in the oven and then do other things in the lab. Some of my vials are in there for hours.
Unless you have an accurate oven I think 150c would suffice. It dries them out and “sterilizes” them.
Before I used this process I placed washed stoppers in a jar of BA and pulled them out one by one when capping.

All of this is time consuming. No getting away from it.

THX, congrats on ordering a hood. Let me know if you need any help with it. They are pretty straight forward though. Hope you ordered a horizontal one.

I'd be nervous about using uncapped vials unless you have a sterile dedicated room just for your lab with air filtration. If not it wouldn't matter if you sterilize your viles and stoppers as soon as you expose them to the open air they would be contaminated. That's why I use pre sealed sterile viles and syringe filters. Takes more time and effort but I believe its safer cause I dont have a dedicated sterile lab

You are correct to a point.

You don’t need a room though. You could use a laminar flow hood in a truck stop restroom and be aseptic, if it was set up properly. An exaggeration, I know, but pretty true.

Using sterile, empty vials, once you pierce the stopper, you have inoculated the sterile vial with contaminants. Just like once you pull a sterile syringe out of its package, it is no longer sterile. Splitting hairs I know, but you can fit millions of pathogens between a split hair.

The bottom line (poor old dead horse) is that without a laminar flow hood, much of the efforts at sterility are in vain.

You are correct sir but since I dont have laminar flow hood the odds of me getting contaminations in a unsealed vile are much greater then if I use a sterile pre sealed vile. Maybe some day I will be able to buy one but since I only brew for my personal use it's not cost effective right now. I know it's a gamble but life in general is a gamble

      $800 for the autoclave (used).
$1800 for the flowhood (used but has a new filter in it)
