Advanced filtering...even for the homebrewer!
I made some short videos during a recent production run to post here for educational purposes. I found that I needed to upload to a third party then link them. No thanks!
So, I have had several PMs asking about this subject so I will post the products and some of the sources of these products. Honestly, if you ever filter this way, you’ll never want to do it another way again. I have found this useful ever for as small as 300ml batches. If you don’t mind a little cross-compound contamination, you can use one filter for several different batches.
Filters: Whatman Polycap AS36 nylon filters. There are many sources. I originally bought them from Amazon but found dealing with the seller direct was much better.
Pump: CR Pump BT100LC with YT1515x head and #17 silicone tubing. I ordered directly from crpumps.com and the sent it DHL from China. Got it in 5 days. Pump, head and 10 meters of tubing was under $600 delivered. This thing is amazing for its cost and can be used for filtering and dispensing as well. You will need to autoclave the tubing for sterile dispensing and metering.
Essentially I just pump from beaker through a pre-sterilized Polycap into a sterile media bottle. I filter at 50ml/min because I’m in no hurry AND slower is less problematic. I put a small zip tie around the nipple of the filter as a precaution. There’s a trick for getting all of the air out of the tubing as well as thefikter housing. A bit of trial and error and everyone can figure it out. You don’t want air in the tubing. Air compresses and you be bathed in oily hormones if you leave air bubbles in the system.
There’s also a trick to get all the oils out of the system when you are sucking at the bottom of your beaker. I lose very little product with my method.

Do you have to have a company to order from them? What's the price, can't seem to find any prices.

I typed “Polycap 36” into amazon AND google and found plenty. Below is the type I ordered available on Amazon. I won’t give the specific company I order from because LE needs to connect their own dots. Like I said, search around and you’ll find some at a price you can afford.
I want to mention that even in the absence of a peristaltic pump, one could probably use these in a vacuum setup using a Erlenmeyer flask with a vacuum nipple and getting the barbed outlet filter. Might even be able to vacuum filter into a media bottle with the right attachments.

Sounds like an awesome set up. Using a hand held manual pump and whatman zapcaps for now.
