Recipes are the smallest part. If you aren’t familiar with aseptic techniques, pathogen mitigation and the like, learning this is a better place to start.
Most guys are home brewing with little of the proper equipment needed, mainly a laminar flow workbench or hood. Sure it can be done, but it is reckless.

As a youth I made lots of pipe bombs. I even mixed my own powders from raw ingredients. Had 100% success in blowing shit up. No injuries.
Then when explosives became my thing in the Navy, I realized how incredibly fucking stupid EVERYTHING I did was.
Steroids are pretty cheap to buy. The investment into equipment to brew is not. I would guess. $1000 to start, with a hood being the biggest chunk.

I made a thread on top level equipment being accessible, if you are patient. I recently bought a Midmark Speedclave for $250 in flawless condition. I walked into the clinic and removed it from their working lab. I bought a Dispensette digital bottletop metering pump for $180 and a Crimpenstein for $300.
This savings is significant!
Does a home brewer need these things? Probably not, but the autoclave would be nice. It’s too small for my use but I couldn’t pass it up. Perfect for sterilizing 75 vials or so.

I agree, watching how it’s done correctly , and having that knowledge definitely would be cool.

Return on Investment or RIO is how many businesses quantify whether it is “worth it or not”? For example, I want to buy an HPLC rig. Let’s say I get one at a steal for $5k. If getting a sample checked costs $100, then 50 test break even. Not counting time, education, consumables, etc.
Then there’s the factor of where? You can pass off a pressure cooker as your new found love of canning, or the buying of jugs of chemicals as...well, I don’t know what you’d say about them. But what’s difficult is hiding a big ass laminar flow hood and all the other crap.

Now let’s look at legality. If you are in the USA especially, the government works actively pursuing violators of the Steroid Act. It’s one thing to be buying a vial here and there. They generally don’t care, but the go after guys making and selling. Let’s face it, EVERYONE starts out “making personal” gear. But that’s quick to turn into giving some to your mates and that turning into being a “dealer”. Is that what you want?

I use 6-8 vials of Test a year. You should be paying around $30/ea from a sponsor. That’s a mere $240/year. Add a few more compounds and you are looking at well under a $1000/year for full blown cycles.

Test cost me just over $1 per vial to make, including packaging. Is that better than $30? Sure, but is it really worth it?

If you want to make your own stuff so the only variables are the raws and your process, then yes it's worth it. Is it cost effective? yes. Do you need to know what you're doing, 100%. If you're not willing to take the time to research and read everything you can and you're asking for videos, I don't think you're ready. It's going to take some dedication on your end to understand that process. There is plenty of info out there.

Good point, SloppyJ...which I missed. The whole reason I got started was a bottle of “Sustabolan 350” I bought at a farmacia here. Nothing seemed right so I retooled my lab for brewing and now my motto is “If I don’t make it, I don’t take it.” Pretty much sums it up.

So yes, the peace of mind is a huge factor in deciding if it’s worth it.
