A few essentials for the lab

As I sit here brewing my batch of DECA, it occurs to me that there are things everyone should keep in the lab just because.

      1. Tin foil. I use it to cover my beaker when it’s off the heat and waiting for cool down
      2. Plastic baggies. Maybe you got some items to dispose of and don’t want them on your table, but the trash can isn’t in your room. Put towelettes, extra syringes, and other items in a single bag you can throw away when you’re less occupied.
      3. Alcohol hand wipes and hand sanitizer. When you leave the lab and come back, it’s good to clean the hands and wrists with 70% alcohol. Easy way to make sure you’re not adding bacteria to the product. Also, the wipes do a nice quick job of cleaning your workspace before, during and after your work.
      4. Syringes. Sometimes your mixture may not mix as well as you’d like, and you need to add BB. A 3 ml syringe is perfect to up the dose in the middle of heating.
      5. Gel ice pack. Use this to sit your finished oil on, before you filter it. Cools it down much quicker than sitting around waiting on it to cool for 2 hours.

If anyone has anything else to add, feel free

I just cover my Pyrex with tinfoil and put in my fridge to cool down.

Curious what you use those propane torches for?

Bunsen burner. A Bunsen burner can create a sterile field in which you can fill your vials.

So a Bunsen burner sends heat upward and outward, creating a sterile field like an invisible dome. So under that invisible dome, I can fill the open vials in a sterile environment

Is there a post about this explaining further that you know of? Or could you elaborate on the way you do this? I’ve been looking at flow hoods lately but I’m definitely interested in not spending that much money on one.

A Bunsen burner is also used in microbiology laboratories to sterilise pieces of equipment[7] and to produce an updraft that forces airborne contaminants away from the working area.
