Thread: Few questions

So I’ve done a good bit of research and want to get my hands dirty soon.

I completely understand the raws, ba, BB, mixing it, etc. I just have a few newbie questions.

1) are there any videos showing how to use a whatman? I know to get .20 or .22 but what size ML to use? How many times can I use the same filter? I guess this is the main part that is confusing to me.

2) can I put a glass beaker inside a pot of 1 inch water on the stove for heating process?

3) the final step of putting it into the vials is also confusing to me. Do I buy presealed vials? Uncapped vials? If I buy uncapped vials, do I need a hand crimped? Lastly, I assume if I buy sealed vials I’ll have to break the seal to get the product inside.

detailed info is much appreciated as I’m about as new to this as you can get.

You want to use a 60ml syringe and .22 pvdf filter and you can filter around 100mls per filter usually

You don't need a glass beaker, you can use a Pyrex measuring cup no problem

You buy sterile vials and fill them by filtering gear through a needle. Syringe to filter to 18g needle then push into rubber stopper on sterile vial

1. PVDF .22 is your ideal, can withstand some heat as well. The filter can be used once, highly recommend bottle filler tops (pre sterile units) typically come in 100ml, 250ml, 500ml etc for your whole batch.
2. I’d recommend a heat plate with stirring rods, but yes the water in a pot on the stove does ‘essentially’ get the job done.
3. Buy sterilized vials, it’s much easier. You’ll have to inject your finished brew into each vial, I find this to be the safest and most cost effective way. If you go the route of unsealed vials and a crimper, you’ll have to establish a method for sterilization as well.

i think the only thing I’m not understanding is loading the oil into the vial.

if I buy pre sterile vials, they’ll already be sealed and capped, right? I’ll have to inject the filtered finished oil through the sterile seal correct?
