Boxing purists who hate it don't know their history as bare knuckles are the roots of boxing. In fact, gloves cause more brain injuries as you can hit harder without risking hand injury. Ironically, though, they were introduced to make fights last longer, not protect hands.

Exactly, this is true. When I was boxing (not professionally), we only wore gloves during sparring and mitt work. I did start heavy bag work with bag gloves, but as I got better, I moved to wrist wraps.
I do not advise anyone hitting a bag bare handed, though. It will rip your skin off. I have seen many cock guys trying to show off only to leave with there knuckles torn up and the bag unharmed.
