I agree that if the Government wants your info bad enough they will get it through legal channels or any techniques necessary (hacking, etc). Since none of us are terrorists (I hope), our main concern is the US going through the legal process with certain countries, but fortunately there are still some countries will never cooperate with US in criminal matters.

All this basically means is that the NSA and other 3 letter agencies may know everything that is in your email account, but as long as you are just using gear and using a email provider located in a country where the US has a difficult time getting legal cooperation, you are as safe as you can be. But we must always remember, nothing is 100% safe.
