      powerlifting and bjj

am a novice powerlifter, i love the big lifts but also im into mma and bjj. so ive been off and on doing bjj but it seems that if i get sore from one it affects the other's progression. Plus my legs are quite big nothing crazy(26" middle of my quad) but it is hard to use sneak them out of postions and also my hips affect me. my hips since i do alot of deads and skwat....my hips are pretty stiff. anyone else have a similar problem where powerlifting affects a hobbie of yours and how yall work around it?
...have pitty on me brothers im new to posting on forums, still figuring everything out.

I practice martial arts and love to roll. Lifting definitely makes me a stronger grappler but kills my stamina for stand up. It is hard to balance them both. But like you I love to do both lifting and mma. I haven't found a balance just yet myself. I tried circuit training with treadmill and box jumps thrown in between lifts and that kinda worked. Then did my heavy lifts at the end. That's the best I've come up with so far.

thats great to hear someone that understands the love for both and the struggle, definatly going look into circuit training or some sort of functional training prior to heavy lifting. and stamina thats another thing i forgot to mention my stamina is poor also. tried running for a whole month but i need some knee sleeves i guess heavy lifting has done some damage. thanks benlash 74!

I was once in your boat bro, I have tried to fight these battles on and off for years. I roll at least 4 times a week and powerlift. I'll be honest...I have not found a way to continually progress in both... unless you spend some serious time looking at your mobility and stretching. You cannot just train both 100 percent and not use some kind of training to "bridge" them together.

On the other hand deca has healed some injuries sustained from years of jits and judo and lifting has helped avoid further injuries in relation to my shoulders but its a balancing act.

I honestly think anything that makes you pump to much is bad for your BJJ.

Our bodys can take it all. You can train in all the different sports you want but if you want to progress over the years you need to choose one and stick to training specifically for that. Then play the other sports on the side as a hobby for fun rather that competitively or consistently for that matter. My 2 cents

I came to the conclusion that I could not handle doing both I was constantly in pain from one or the other and was not my best at either sport. Since I did Judo/Kempo/JuJitsu for a little over 12 years I decided to give it up and put all of my efforts towards power lifting. IMO if you are trying to be competitive in either one you need to devote all of your energy to the one you want the most.

You probably hurt from carrying around that excess weight. 5'11 265 and your bench is 255? Bro you need to cut that body fat...and dont do any more cycles until you do...you dont need more body fat. If your powerlifting numbers were way higher, Id be lead to believe you were muscle than fat..but they are not. Im not being a dick, but you need to cut fat, gain some flexibility, and stop using AAS. You could easily have those same numbers at 200 pounds of body weight. You are carrying around 70 or 80 pounds of useless weight. That weight is hard on your joints..especially the hips. Thats why many obese people need hip replacment. Cut some weight bro and build from a solid foundation. When I started powerlifting 15 years ago, i was 230 at 6'6. Now im 320..solid and have some respectable numbers. Thats just my two cents...again not being a dick...ive just been around awhile and wanted to give you some solid advice.

that is true brother, i get what you mean i took no offense. i do see that all the time where i see guys 40-70 lighter than me doing stronger lifts than me. like i said im new to the game and i feel like weight helped me get to where im at and i need to seriously get down to a functional weight of 220-240 not only for bjj/powerlifting but to be healthy... another thing i do have a sentaur style body haha i have big lower body .I do try to cut down but im still getting to know my body and ive done cuts and bulks (naturally) and got up to 250lbs. if i had to guess of now maybe 22-25% bodyfat based on google images... but like most of my buddies say my legs hold most of my weight maybe due to years of sprinting and sports in soccer, skateboarding, football, and basketball.

ive been cutting my typical calorie intake in half in efforts to slim down ill try to post pics on my before and after.

as far as bjj ive put that aside powerlifting and bjj watching videos at home and working on flexibility and endurance. my squat, deadlift and school are my goals for now.

my bench does suck haha but its not fun or something i look foward too id rather do a BB style workout for chest like a pump workout, as far as cycling the most benefits i get is a fuller apperance and recovery although the weight doesnt get any easier...i do get a small boost but nothing extrordinary. food makes me strong powerlifting and bjj
