I had a similar experience, and was going to offer basically the same advice others have.

One thing I'll add is that I've often noticed people with piriformis problems also have really tight TFLs (Tensor fasciae latae). That was the case with me and several people I've trained with. You can lacrosse ball that as well. It might be worth a try just to see if you also have some tightness there. Another thing that my PT friend recommended is to lie on my side with a pillow between my legs, knees slightly bent, and have wife use her elbow to apply pressure on TFL and piriformis. That worked very well because sometimes certain areas were so tender that it was difficult to relax with the lacrosse ball.

EDIT: I didn't realize this was an old post. Just saw it on the front page and was trying to be helpful, but it seems I've fallen into the trope of being the newbie that starts responding to months-old threads. My apologies! I see some subforums are more lively than others, so I'll check dates in the future!
