      Piriformis Syndrome... AWFUL

Has anyone had any experience with this and how have you treated it?? I thought I just pulled a glute muscle deadlifting during my last PL meet in November but realized in Jan that it was piriformis syndrome based on the symptoms. Have a PT appointment next week to start rehabbing but was wondering if any peptides would help?

Take a lacrosse ball and dig out your upper glute for about 3 min on both sides then do 20 rdl’s while allowing your knees to bend.. it shouldn’t hurt. It’ll help the nerve glide through that area while normalizing muscle contraction. Don’t dig on the pirifirmis, the upper glute will hurt enough

I'll try the upper glute. I try to roll the whole glute out and I think it probably irritates it more. RDLs are usually the thing that hurt the most but I'll try them specifically after lacrosse rolling.

If your RDLs hurt your back that bad then you’re probably getting in extension in the lumbar spine. If you can maintain a neutral spine and shove your hips back, allowing your knees to bend but not allowing them to move forward so you have to allow your chest go down more. It sounds like you’re pretty flared up so I would wait til your symptoms get a little better. The upper glute is all you need unless it’s in your hamstring too but the mid glute can get really irritated especially since the piriformis is right there

Dude thanks so much for the advice. Hit my upper glute hard with the lacrosse ball and just did some stretching mimicking the rdl movement and for the first time in months I was able to get through a leg day with no piriformis pain whatsoever

You’re welcome! I love hearing that shit. It works. Don’t get behind the pain, stay consistent and in front of it. Good luck!

If it is in fact piriformis syndrome then a lacrosse ball should help a lot. Sometimes I get tight hips and after using the lacrosse ball against a wall for a while i get some good relief.

I had a similar experience, and was going to offer basically the same advice others have.

One thing I'll add is that I've often noticed people with piriformis problems also have really tight TFLs (Tensor fasciae latae). That was the case with me and several people I've trained with. You can lacrosse ball that as well. It might be worth a try just to see if you also have some tightness there. Another thing that my PT friend recommended is to lie on my side with a pillow between my legs, knees slightly bent, and have wife use her elbow to apply pressure on TFL and piriformis. That worked very well because sometimes certain areas were so tender that it was difficult to relax with the lacrosse ball.

EDIT: I didn't realize this was an old post. Just saw it on the front page and was trying to be helpful, but it seems I've fallen into the trope of being the newbie that starts responding to months-old threads. My apologies! I see some subforums are more lively than others, so I'll check dates in the future!

A buddy of mine is having issues also. His therapist is putting him on a decompression table and doing some minor tracton. Also, I shared this video with him and he said it has been helping. Not sure if this is in the area you need but - The Worst Way to Fix Sciatica (DO THIS INSTEAD!) - YouTube
