Scottsboro Police Officer admits to using anabolic steroids

      SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -
A Scottsboro Police officer has admitted to illegally using anabolic steroids. The announcement was made Monday morning during a divorce hearing.

The officer not only admits using, but said in court that is why he was suspended just less than two weeks ago. The bigger picture also shows that the Scottsboro Police Department was made aware of the officer's use when he was hired four years ago.

Scottsboro Police Officer Chris McIllwain admitted to obtaining and illegally using steroids most recently from June until the most recent time as November 6th, two days before he was called in for questioning by supervisors at the police department.

Also in court Monday, he was questioned as a police officer what he would do if he caught someone else in possession of illegal steroids. "We arrest them," he said.

But in a stunning revelation, officer McIllwain admitted he told Scottsboro Police he had used steroids in his pre-employment application.

WAFF 48 asked Chief Ralph Dawe to comment. Here's how the conversation went.

Want to talk to us chief?

"Ah, no thank you not today, said Chief Dawe.

"You knew, you guys knew he was using steroids when you hired him."

"I can't talk about this today," replied Dawe.

      "And it happened again."

We have the names of all five officers named by officer McIllwain who used steroids. We've elected to withhold those names until we can make an attempt to contact them.

The situation with four suspended Scottsboro Police Officers continues to develop.

There are now allegations involving controlled substance use involving at least one officer in the department.

Chief Ralph Dawe declined to say if the allegation was related to one of the officers suspended. But according to court documents, an estranged wife claims her husband was using illegal steroids.

Chief Dawe said they did receive information concerning steroid use from a sheriff's department domestic violence report last week involving officer Christopher McIllwain and his estranged wife.

He said the investigation into allegations began prior to the domestic violence incident.

According to court documents filed Tuesday, Ashley McIllwain claims her husband, Christopher McIllwain is controlling and high tempered, is on steroids, and has a raging temperament.

Court documents claim officer McIllwain had punched holes in the couple's bedroom door and put his head through their bedroom door.

Evidence has also been submitted to the court alledging violent acts including damage to a jewelry box and alledges other acts include destroying a picture frame.

WAFF 48 reached officer McIllwain by phone but he declined comment. A hearing between the parties is set for Monday, November 21st.
