“Knock and Talk” Technique – Q&A

If you are going to ever be purchasing, using or possibly even conversing about anabolic steroids, it’s probably a good idea to know a few things about the infamous “knock and talk” technique used by law enforcement. Take notes – this could save you a great deal of headache one day.

Q: First off, what in the world is the “knock and talk”?
A: A “knock and talk” is a police investigation technique in which 2 or so law enforcement officers will knock on your door and ask you to speak with them.

Q: What is their intent in knocking on my door in the first place?

A: They are seeking information. They want to learn as much about you, your practices, your home, your job, your acquaintances, and any other information they can gain. They will be looking at your arm size, your computer’s location, your mail, your refrigerator, your garbage, your mailing supplies, and anything else in plain sight. And they will ask you questions of varying topics to get you to admit something which can be used against you later, or to get a warrant.

Q: What will this information tell them?

A: this information from a “knock and talk” interview will be used to make a case against you. The charge will somehow be related to steroids, and could include anything from a simple conspiracy to receive steroids (including an email asking about a source) to outright distribution.

Q: Do I have to allow a “knock and talk”?

A: No. Unless they have a warrant, you do not have to open your door. And if they have a warrant, they don’t both with the “knock and talk”. They just knock and begin searching. Repeat that to yourself. If the police are doing a “knock and talk”, they do NOT have enough evidence for a full search. They are fishing for information, and if your fish gets cooked, it’s because you turned the heat on yourself.

Q: How should I handle police who would like to engage in a “knock and talk”?

A: You should tell them you are very busy and cannot make time to speak with them. Remember, as friendly and helpful as they might act, they are there with one purpose: To get information from you. They will use this against you, in one way or another.

Q: What should I do if law enforcement shows up for repeated “knock and talk” conversations?
A: Contact a lawyer, and spend a little money putting him on retainer. Refer all police inquiries to him. Remember that if an investigation is in the “knock and talk” stage, you’re in decent shape. They don’t have the evidence they need, but they are looking for it. Whether you are guilty or innocent does not matter. What matters is that once you give them some piece of information, they will leverage it and use it against you, leaving you in a much worse place legally. Never consent to a “knock and talk” conversation. Act too busy, and refer them to your lawyer if the visits persist.

If they have enough suspicion to be doing one you've drawn too much attention to yourself.
