Former UW football player pleads guilty to steroid trafficking

A former University of Waterloo football player pleaded guilty Thursday to drug offences and a series of break-and-enters.
Nathan Zettler, 24, admitted in court that he possessed and trafficked steroids in March 2010 and took part in several break-and-enters.
Crown attorney Melissa Ernewein said she would ask the judge to put Zettler behind bars on the theft and break-and-enter charges.

“I suspect that the argument at the sentencing hearing will revolve around whether it should be a house arrest situation or traditional jail and a custodial sentence,” she told CTV.
“On behalf of the provincial crown, I will be seeking a traditional jail sentence.”

Defence lawyer Steve Gehl says he doesn’t think prison is necessary for his client.
“We are definitely pursuing a conditional sentence for Mr. Zettler (for) all counts on all of the charges,” he said.

Sentencing in the case will take place in June.

The University of Waterloo suspended its football program for the entire 2010 season due to a steroid scandal, with nine members of the team testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
Zettler’s former roommate, Brandon Krukowski, was accused of selling steroids to teammates in 2011, but all nine charges were dropped.
