Steroid Kingpin Brian Wainstein in Legal Battle with Allegedly Anti-Semitic Neighbors

Brian Wainstein (aka Brian Benjamin), the one-time operator of the underground lab (UGL) known as Axio Labs, has been keeping busy while he is free on R500,000 ($51,000) bail. He was arrested and accused of being one of the largest international steroid dealers in history. Meanwhile, Wainstein is fighting extradition to the United States where he faces decades in prison on steroid distribution charges. But the steroid kingpin still has time to carry on a bitter legal battle with his allegedly anti-semitic neighbors.

Wainstein has filed a hate speech complaint with the Equality Court in Capetown. The Axio Labs founder believed he has been the victim of “unfair discrimination, hate speech and harassment” because he is “a person of the Jewish faith.” The complaint named Louis and Eleonara Matthey and their son Robert.

Wainstein and the Mattheys are neighbors in the luxurious Victoria & Alfred Waterfront complex in Capteown. Wainstein alleged that Eleonara Matthey walked past his door and while uttering the words “f*cking Jews.” In addition, an unidentified member of the Matthey family reportedly requested that V&A security officers confront Wainstein to “tell that f*cking Jew to turn down his music.”

There is much additional history behind the neighborly dispute between Wainstein and the Mattheys that was not disclosed in the hate speech complaint. It is important to note that Wainstein could very well still be masterminding his multi-million dollar steroid distribution empire at Axio Labs if it weren't for the Matthey's son Robert.

Robert Matthey was the whistleblower who filed a “noise complaint” with the Capetown Metro Police. When police showed up to question Wainstein, an officer recognized him as a fugitive on Interpol's most wanted list. Thus, Matthey's police complaint was ultimately responsible for Wainstein's downfall.

The Mattheys are likely and understandably bitter because Robert was not rewarded for his instrumental role in capturing Wainstein. Instead South African prosecutors decided to charge Matthey with robbery in an incident arising during the arrest of Wainstein.

Robert allegedly “stole” a camera-enabled smartphone from one of Wainstein's friends. The friends had snapped several photographs of Robert after they recognized him as the man who called police. Matthey forcibly took the phone in order to delete the pictures.
The robbery charges and the fact that Wainstein was released on bail did not sit well with the Mattheys.

Louis Matthey wrote an email to the corporate offices of the V&A Waterfront Complex to complain about a fugitive steroid dealer roaming the complex and trying to sell steroids to “sporting South African youth.”

“He has done [four] months prison in Ireland and is wanted by Cypriot Interpol section for illegal steroid manufacturing and trafficking. He is wanted in USA, France, Germany, the UK and several other states for the same reasons,” wrote Matthey in the email. “Benjamin still struts around Cape Town with his head held high and is probably active trying to poison our sporting South African youth as we speak.”
Clearly, there is no love lost between Wainstein and the Mattheys.

Wainstein wants The Equality Court to order the Mattheys to offer a formal apology and a donation of R100,000 to the Cape Town Torah High School.
