KAMEG K-9 police officer Paul Berge, pictured here during a charity event in December, has been suspended for illegal steroid use.

A Kankakee police officer who was assigned to the area's drug task force has been reassigned following allegations of steroid abuse last month.

Paul Berge, who was working as a K-9 officer for the Kankakee Area Metropolitan Enforcement Group, is back on the city's patrol unit.

Meanwhile, a KAMEG dog named Pato, a 5 1/2-year-old Belgian Malinois, has been reassigned to the Bradley Police Department, said Aaron Harsy, director of KAMEG. It is unclear whether Pato was Berge's dog.

The Daily Journal has previously reported that Berge was facing possible disciplinary action but Kankakee Police Chief Larry Regnier declined to comment.

Pato will join a second K-9 unit on Bradley's force and the department will need to train an officer to be Pato's new handler.

Bradley Police Chief Steve Coy said the village will have to spend about $12,000 for new equipment and training. The money will come from the department's drug forfeiture fund that has a balance of more than $25,000.
