      Different types of protein

Chances are at some stage you will come across different types of protein if you haven’t already, The four main types of protein in my opinion are Whey protein, Casein protein, Soy protein and egg protein, descriptions for each are shown betlow.Whey protein
      Casein protein
      Soy protein
      Egg protein
Whey protein is the most commonly used protein supplement amongst bodybuilders and other athletes, it is by far the quickest digesting protein around, this is why it is such a good supplement following a workout, as soon as your body is damaged from your workout, whey protein should be consumed immediately, it will be refueling your muscles in around 30 minutes, whey protein has also got the highest biological value of any protein source, meaning that out of the protein you put into your body, almost all of it will be used/absorbed by the body. See the next page for more on the absorption rates of protein products – protein sources, absorption and biological value

Casein protein is another common protein supplement used by many bodybuilders and athletes, although in terms of the absorption speed it goes the opposite way to whey! The slow absorption will help sustain elevated amino acid levels over a longer period of time, upto 8 hours infact! This makes it a great choice before going to bed, giving your body the protein and amino acids it needs whilst you sleep, preventing your body from going into a catabolic state and loosing muscle mass.
Casein protein is actually extracted via ultra filtration from milk,
without the use of chemicals. This can increases the amount of bioactive milk peptides which support the immune functions as well as aid in muscle growth. Casein protein can also be a good choice if you are having to go long periods of time without a meal for whatever reason.

Soy protein is an ideal source of protein for vegetarians/ people who dont eat meat or are lactose intolerant, this is becouse soy protein is sourced from soy flour. Although soy protein is easily digestable by the body, it does not mix as well in water in comparison with other protein types. Aswell as being a good source of protein and antioxidants, soy protein has also got many other health benefits, some of these are: Reducing the risk of hearth disease, lowering cholesterol, slowing down the growth of cancer and tumour-causing cells. For menopausal women it can prevent osteoporosis and help in strengthening bones, research has shown it also lessens the symptoms of menopause. To some it up soy protein is a good choice for those who don’t eat meat or are lactose intolerant.

      Egg protein
is thought to be one of the highest quality proteins available, it has virtually no fat or carbs to it (if the egg protein your purchase is only made up of egg whites, see the links at the bottom of the page), is easily digestable and absorbed well by the body. if your buy egg protein in supplement/powder form chances are it will be just the white off the egg, although the yolk contains lots of vitamins, minerals and healthy fats, along with an equal amount of protein. Egg protein
is a good protein to have first thing on a morning as it is quite fast digesting,it could also be used post workout if whey protein is not available to you.

I heard somewhere that Soy can raise estrogen levels? Can't remember where I read or heard it but it made me switch to Almond milk so I guess it was a reputable source of info. I use whey during the day and casein at night. If I don't have a shake at bed time i'll wake up at 3 am and eat everything in the house.
