I had the same issues. Always lagging at my core. I hired a trainer to specifically help strengthen my core. Worked great. He'd have me take a kettle bell or dumbbell, let hang by your side and march( really bring your knees up high) from one side of the gym and then switch arms and come back. The weight has to be heavy enough to make you fight for your balance. Really fire the obliques. Another was planks. Lots of planks. Rope crunches and leg raises. Another one is cable swings. You can google that to see the form you should use. If I can think of anything else I will post. I know there is a few more. These really help me strengthen my core.
