I cant remember if it was Japan or China, but they killed it during the summer Olympics doing the deadlift. Same thing, small framed guys lifting a ton of weights.

There are some compounds that will give you a lot of strength but not the bulk. Russia and china have been doing this for the Olympics for decades.
