Ill tell you one thing, as easy as it sounds (going up and getting a signature) it's the most annoying thing a mail carrier has to deal with. They are overworked! They are expected to squeeze 10 hours of work into an 8 hours day. And taking 5 mins to stop and get a signature for something a few times a day adds up quickly.

I have a bunch of those cards you have to sign that I keep at my house and when I'm expecting a package I sign the card and tape it to my door so they can keep moving. Even if I'm home I do that.

Happens to me all the time. I bet you are probably living in an apartment complex and the only entrance is through a gate (access by a fob or something else). The postal delivery guy/girl doesn't have access to the gates, so what he / she will do is say they attempted delivery then bring it back to the local post office. The following day the postman who has access to open your gates will try and deliver the letter. If he / she was unable, they will leave a note for you to collect at your local post office.
